Concept Note

  1.4 Militarism and Health

The linkage between the increasing militarization of countries, regions, zones and health is as yet under researched and still less spoken about. Knowledge of the enormity of the havoc being caused by militaries across the globe is increasing. The resort by militaries to ever larger and more lethal weaponry combined with the fact that, all over, militaries are protected from scrutiny, deflects attention from the rapacious environmental destruction caused by them. Further, the more direct adverse impacts for women in militarized zones include: increase in prostitution and risk of HIV/AIDS; increase in violence against women [for instance, rape being used as a weapon for ethnic cleansing]; increase in budgets for military at the cost of funds for social services; restricting movements of population in the zone, which becomes more critical for women and girl children.
